Tesla PowerShare Triple EV Charger Install

Green Wave Electrical Contractors was hired to install three EV chargers in Wilmington, NC. The task at hand was that the client wanted three separate chargers that linked together to share the available power in an electrical panel to charge multiple vehicles at once.

In the Tesla PowerShare group management system, one charger is designated as the leader and the others as followers; with Tesla, you can connect up to 6 chargers. The leader wirelessly communicates with all followers to distribute power across all wall connectors in the group, minimizing the charge time for each car while ensuring that the total power being drawn is within safe limits of the electrical supply.

This charger, by the electrical panels, was set as the leader EV charger

All EV charging circuits are continuous loads and are required to be sized at 125 percent according to the NEC code. The standard charge rate is 48 amps x 125 percent = 60 amp circuit.

Tesla PowerShare allows multiple chargers to connect to a single circuit; in this case, 60 amps for a 48-amp charger. The chargers communicate wirelessly using wifi and automatically adjust depending on load and how many cars are connected. In this case, there are 3 chargers, but only 2 are using Tesla PowerShare.

If both chargers are plugged into cars, each car will get 24 of the 48 amps.

If 1 is plugged in, it will get the full 48.

If both are plugged in and 1 finishes charging quicker than the other, as the charge rate decreases on the fully charged car, the charge rate on the second charger increases output, so there are always 48 amps available.

Sound complicated? It can be, but luckily for you, we have the experience and knowledge so it’s not complicated for you!
